Senior Molecular Technician

Responsibilities / Essential Functions:
The Senior Molecular Technician is responsible for performing day to day clinical molecular assays and tests for Tennessee Oncology as directed by the Molecular Laboratory Services Technical Director. The Senior Molecular Technician implements the directives and works under the direct supervision of the Molecular Laboratory Services Technical Director and in compliance with the Laboratory Medical Director and Laboratory Technical Director. Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal requirements. Implements and maintains clinical practice standards. Provides technical performance responsibilities for molecular tests performed within the Tennessee Oncology molecular laboratory service.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 • Assists Molecular Laboratory Services Director in performing technical functions of the molecular laboratory, including sample processing, nucleic acid extraction, molecular assay setup, and data analysis.
 • Assists Molecular Laboratory Services Director in validating, implementing, performing and maintaining clinical laboratory molecular service tests.• Maintains molecular laboratory equipment performance by performing routine maintenance procedures and certifying instrument performance. Aids in equipment troubleshooting and coordinating with technical support.
 • Assists Molecular Laboratory Services Director in maintaining and/or overseeing medical molecular laboratory supplies inventory by monitoring inventory level; providing loss prevention and ensuring stock orders are enough for the testing needed.
 • Maintains quality molecular results by assisting in the quality assurance system; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; assist in adjusting policy and procedures; and maintaining appropriate records.
 • Ensures effective communication between laboratory staff, laboratory management, clinic management, medical directors, and administration through meetings, or laboratory review.
 • Identifies and recommends opportunities to improve departmental systems.
 • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.


Knowledge of:
 • Principles and techniques of clinical and pathology molecular laboratory testing procedures (i.e. DNA/RNA extraction, DNA/RNA library preparation; NGS, Target amplification, Quantitative PCR/rtPCR, and other molecular techniques).
 • Human genetics, NGS, and genotyping.• Medical terminology, communicable diseases, and environmental health issues.
 • Laboratory regulations, including quality control of reagents, and equipment, laboratory safety, laboratory documentation requirements, sterilization requirements, and laboratory equipment.
 • Applicable testing techniques.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skills:
  • Critical Skills • 2+ yrs. experience in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Experience with genetics or molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, Quality Control, Library Preparation; Quantitative Real-time PCR; and additional methods surrounding Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).
  • Bench skills preferred, including illumina workflows (Amplicon, Exome, etc.
  • Preferred prior experience with Promega Maxwell; Nanodrop; Qubit; Applied Biosystems 7500 Fast Dx; Illumina MiSeq; illumina NextSeq; Agilent Tapestation; Hamilton STAR;
  • Prior experience with CLIA/CAP laboratory and/or genetic company is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and laboratory SOPs, regulatory and safety procedures.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy are crucial for the position.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully complete projects.
  • State specific regulatory standards and accreditation organization standards to include COLA and CAP Additional Skills
  • Skill in performing molecular laboratory tests (i.e. DNA/RNA extraction, DNA/RNA library preparation; NGS, Target amplification, Quantitative Real-Time PCR and other molecular techniques).
  • Skill in using computers for database management, testing, and record-keeping functions.
  • Ability to communicate appropriately, both orally and written.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with health care teams.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to demonstrate full range of motion, manual dexterity, and eye–hand coordination in use of equipment and instruments.

 


Qualifications & Requirements:
• Minimum Bachelor's Degree in a laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution and have at least 2 years molecular laboratory training or experience in the specialty of non-waived testing utilizing molecular techniques.
 • Knowledge of CAP, CLIA, and other local, state, federal regulations

 CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
 • Technologist in Molecular Biology, MB (ASCP)
 • Special Analyst, Molecular Diagnostics (State of TN Medical Board)
 • Additional related Degrees/Certifications preferred
